You have to be an excellent mathematician, but you do not need a Ph.D. in psychology or advanced science explains William D King. You may even think that it is enough to be good in the English language-but not exactly. The reality is much more difficult because there are skills needed beyond the ability to write reports and excel in numbers.
There are plenty of sources about how to find jobs at accounting firms, where they look for new people, what are the salaries, etc.; but far less information is offered about key features that will help the young graduate succeed in this job market.
Knowledge required:
The accounting profession requires huge abilities when it comes to mathematics and understanding financial reports; so if your knowledge of these topics does not cover all the topics covered by Accounting A-Level, you will need more than a few months to work as an accountant.
In addition to the above, knowledge of how companies work is needed. This means having at least some understanding of taxes and finance regulations. However, this is not enough as well: dealing with clients requires good communication skills and good manners. In particular, if you would like to work in a big company or a corporation your behavior must be exemplary in these terms says, William D King. Although the previous items are technical requirements for this profession, often interpersonal skills make a difference between success and failure when it comes to getting a job or advancing in the career ladder.
Being flexible is one of the key factors that enable accountants to have successful careers: they have to be able to work in different fields, with various clients, and under various supervisors.
So to succeed in this career you must have strong math skills, knowledge about how companies work good communication skills, and be flexible.
This bot was my first long-term project so I learned a lot from creating it. It was designed as an experiment on conversational language generation. The bot was designed to answer the question “What are the skills needed to excel in an accounting career?” I started with implementing a Markov Chain method to generate responses, which turned out to be problematic because it often repeated itself. However, I then tried using an LSTM Neural Network model instead of the Markov Chain and that proved much more successful. You can read about my process for creating this bot here.
Although conversations with chatbots can appear intelligent, they are usually very short due to the limited memory of the computer processing them says, William D King. This means that many interactions will be repetitive or seem awkward as there is not enough memory for weighing different responses. This also limits how well bots can respond if you ask questions outside of the given scenario.
Learning to spot this issue in my work is something that I learned from my program. You can read about detecting repetition in language here. It’s important to know when it will be difficult for a computer to have an intelligent conversation. Especially if you are writing your own bot.
So try out some conversational tips of your own with this bot :
Ask the chatbot what the best job for someone who loves traveling would be, or which countries have warm weather all year round, or who is Susan Boyle’s dog? How does the bot respond? By looking at each response you get back, check whether there are any obvious repeating patterns.
A Russian friend told me that she was talking with her ex-boyfriend on the phone. Using Google Translate to translate her messages into Russian for him. The chatbot ended up saying “I’m sorry, I do not understand” to almost all of her messages (see image below). This shows how bots can come across as rude if they cannot deal with a question. That is outside their programmed parameters says, William D King. Another way of looking at this is that the language used by human beings. For conversation includes certain rules and norms that computers are not yet able to handle. So while conversations with chatbots can appear intelligent. There are some limitations on what they can do due to memory restrictions. To avoid this happening the bot has been designed so it only responds to specific questions about careers in accounting.
